New comment deadline: May 25

We have had a request to extend the time to comment about the interviews by a few days, and therefore are setting a new deadline of May 25. Thank you very much to those who have offered their thoughts, and we hope that this extension will allow anyone who hasn't been able to add a comment yet at this busy time of year an opportunity to be involved.

About this Book

An important and widely-studied aspect of journalism scholarship is the practice of public journalism, sometimes known as civic journalism. The expansion of online news has changed the newspaper industry and journalism in general, audience-created content -- sometimes referred to as citizen journalism or participatory journalism -- has become increasingly prominent, and ideas of civic or public journalism have evolved in ways that reflect this shift.

However, the mere use of digital technologies is not the fundamental challenge of a new citizen-engaged journalism, and greater involvement with media production is not the same as greater engagement with civic agendas.

Public Journalism 2.0: The Promise and Reality of a Citizen-Engaged Press sets out to more deeply study how ideals and goals of civic/public journalism can inform new citizen-propelled initiatives by exploring the overlapping and mutually-informing elements of both citizen and civic/public journalism while at the same time defining what makes them distinct.

About this Blog

In planning out the content for Public Journalism 2.0: The Promise and Reality of a Citizen Engaged Press, we thought it could be interesting to use some of the techniques of online participatory journalism in exploring the practice. To that end, we developed the idea of a chapter for each unit of the book called "Open Source," featuring interviews with experts in civic journalism about their thoughts on the field's evolution. The name "Open Source"came from the idea that interview questions would come from not only the authors but the other contributors, and also from the idea of getting comments about the interviews that would be part of the final publication.

The second part of that process is what this blog is about.

Transcripts of interviews with Lewis Friedland, Tanni Haas and Jan Schaffer can be found here, with the ability to offer comments on their answers. Each question is its own blog posting, with its own comment section. We hope to collect a selection of the comments that will be incorporated into the published version of the book.

We invite your comments. But please note that by making a comment you authorize its inclusion in the published book. We reserve the right to edit for clarity and space.
